Here are a few tips to Level up your gear and Surf Experience
Boards
- Upgrade shape for your goals: more rockered/shorter for performance; fuller/longer for paddling and small waves. Consider a high-performance shortboard, hybrid, or a refined funboard.
- Materials: PU for classic feel; epoxy/FST for lighter, more durable, higher buoyancy (good for smaller surfers or travel).
- Get a quality board ding repair kit and consider custom shaping if you want tailored performance.
Fins
- Move from stock to modular fin systems (FCS II, Futures) and experiment with setups: thruster for control, quad for speed/drive, or 2+1 for stability.
- Stiffer fins provide drive; softer for looser feel. Buy a small selection (medium/stiff) from a reputable brand.
Leash & Traction
- Size leash to board length (plus 1–2 ft) and choose cord thickness by wave power (thicker for big waves). Quality swivels reduce tangles.
- Traction pad: 3-piece tail pad with arch bar and kick for better foot lock, especially on shortboards.
Wetsuit & Rash Protection
- Fit is key—snug without restricting breathing. Upgrade to seamless shoulder panels or glued/taped seams for warmth.
- Choose thickness by water temp (e.g., 3/2mm for cool, 4/3 or 5/4 with hood for cold). Consider limestone neoprene or X-Flex for warmth and mobility.
- Add a rash vest or surf shirt with SPF for sun protection.
Accessories & Small Upgrades
- High-quality surf wax appropriate to water temp.
- Soft-top or performance board bag with ventilation for travel and storage.
- Roof racks, padded straps, or a quality surf cart for transport.
- Surf booties and gloves if needed for colder conditions.
