The Right equipment makes all the difference
Your choice of board can make or break your initial experience.
- The Board: Start with a thick, wide soft-top surfboard (often called a "foamie" or longboard). They provide maximum buoyancy, stability, and are much safer when you inevitably fall off.
- The Leash: Always secure the leash (leg rope) to your back ankle so your board doesn't drift away in the current. An Ocean & Earth Sunset or Regular leash is perfect for the beginner. As a rule of thumb, go for a leash the same length as your board. EG: 7ft board, 7ft leash
Location Location Location
- Look for sandy beach breaks with small, gentle waves (specifically "white water" or breaking waves).
- Avoid crowded areas, rocky reefs, or beaches with strong rip currents.
If in doubt, dont paddle out.
Master the Basics on land.
Before you ever touch the water, practice your land drills.
- The Pop-Up: Lay flat on the sand in a paddling position with your hands planted by your ribs. Do a quick push-up, lift your chest, and swiftly sweep your back leg forward into a wide, balanced stance without using your knees.
- The Stance: Keep your knees bent, lower your center of gravity, and position your feet along the center of the board (stringer)
Catching Your First Waves
- Paddling: Lie slightly back on the board so the nose is barely out of the water. Paddle with cupped hands in long, strong strokes.
- Catching the Wave: When a white-water wave approaches, turn your board toward the shore, paddle hard, and feel the wave push you. Once the wave has your momentum, pop up to your feet, and look toward the shoreline.
- Safety First: If you fall, always push away from the board and protect your head with your hands while resurfacing
